About us

A small crew built around the news cycle

curtainvoxa began in Exeter in 2014 with a simple aim: get reliable pictures to editors quickly. Today our camera operators, editors and reporters work together on each job, so nothing is lost between the scene and the screen.

About Us
How we work

From the first phone call to the finished package

Speed only helps if the footage is right. Our workflow is built so that each stage hands cleanly to the next, and the producer always knows where a story stands, whether it is still on the road or already in the edit.

Reaching the story

When a producer calls, we confirm the location, the deadline and the format needed. A camera operator and reporter travel with a kit chosen for the conditions, including low light or wet weather. We keep the brief short and agree who speaks to the gallery. Footage starts moving back as soon as there is something usable, rather than waiting for a full shoot to finish.

Shaping the footage

Raw material goes straight to an edit suite where the editor works against the clock. Packages are cut for pace and clear sound, with lower thirds, captions and graphics applied to your house style. We check names, places and spellings with the reporter before anything leaves us. Alternative versions, such as a short cut for online, can be prepared alongside the main edit.

Delivering to you

Files are exported in the specification you give us and sent by the route that suits your newsroom. For live work, a portable transmission kit sends the signal to your gallery with a test beforehand. Afterwards we keep the project organised so rushes and approvals can be found again. If your own ingest is untidy, we can help you tidy it.

What guides our work

  1. 01

    Speed

Deadlines in news are real, so we prepare kit in advance and keep crews ready to leave. Footage is sent back in stages, so editors can start before the shoot ends.

  2. 02

    Accuracy

Every name, location and caption is checked against what the reporter saw. We would rather take a minute to confirm a detail than send you something that needs correcting.

  3. 03

    Clarity

Clean sound, steady framing and plain graphics let the story speak. We keep communication equally clear, so producers know what is shot, what is cut and when it arrives.

  4. 04

    Care

Handling people on camera, in distressing or public situations, calls for judgement. Our crews work respectfully and keep a calm presence on location.

Questions producers ask us

These are the points we are asked most often before a first booking. If yours is not covered here, the contact page is the quickest way to reach us.

  1. 01

How quickly can a crew reach a story?

It depends on where the story is and how many crews are already out. For locations around Exeter and the wider South West we aim to dispatch as soon as the brief is agreed. We will give you an honest estimate on the first call rather than a promise we cannot keep.

  2. 02

Do you only work in Devon?

We are based in Exeter and cover the South West most often, but we also travel further when a story calls for it. Travel time and costs are discussed at the start so there are no surprises. Tell us the location and we will say plainly whether we can get there.

  3. 03

What file formats do you deliver?

We deliver in the specification your newsroom uses, including broadcast and web formats, with captions and graphics applied if wanted. Tell us your technical requirements when you book. If you are unsure, we can suggest a sensible standard and send a short test file first.

  4. 04

Can you provide a reporter as well as a camera operator?

Yes. Tom Fletcher and colleagues report from the scene and work closely with the camera operator. You can book a full crew or just the camera side, if you already have a reporter on the ground.

  5. 05

Do you offer live reporting from the scene?

We run portable transmission kits for live reports back to your gallery. We test the link before going on air and agree a fallback in case conditions change. Live work needs a little more notice than recorded shoots, so earlier contact helps.

  6. 06

Can you edit footage that someone else shot?

Yes. Our edit suites accept material from other crews, agency feeds and mobile phones. The editor will check the quality and tell you what can be done within your deadline, then add graphics, captions and sound clean-up as required.

  7. 07

Do you work with small newsrooms and online publishers?

Many of our clients are small teams. Our workflow consulting helps with ingest, approvals and archives, so stories move faster with the people you already have. We start by looking at how your day actually runs, and suggest changes that fit.

  8. 08

How do I book or ask for a quote?

Use the contact form or call 01392 204 817 with the location, deadline and the kind of coverage you need. We reply with what we can offer and a clear price. For urgent breaking stories, a phone call is quickest.
